The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Oyo State Council on Friday commended the management of Ibadan Central Hospital Ososami in Ibadan for deploying its state of the art medical facilities to treat the Union’s Treasurer, Akeem Abas.

Oyo News reports that Abas, who works with the News Agency of Nigeria, was attacked by suspected armed robbers last Sunday.

Akeem Abas had attended the NUJ State Executive Council meeting on Sunday at the press Centre Iyaganku GRA, Ibadan and was leaving around 9pm when the suspects on Okada rammed into him which resulted in severe injury as his handset and other belongings were lost in the process.

He was writhing in pains after the attack as the fleeing suspects left him groaning on the road leading to the popular two filling stations adjacent Mile 110.

For several minutes he was lying face down as he could barely walk again. One of his legs was badly affected with scars on his face, hands and legs.

Recalling the incident, Akeem Abas said, ‘I was on my way home, walking down the sleepy road leading to the filling stations on Mile 110 when the guys rammed into me with the intention to dispossess me of my belongings.

‘That route has become criminal’s ‘den’ as they rob passersby almost on daily basis. They were three guys on the Okada who attacked me. They pushed me to the ground and carted away my belongings.

“I sustained serious injuries with my left leg badly affected. I was later moved to the hospital by my colleagues who came to rescue me from where I was lying face down as I could barely walk,” he said.

The NUJ Chairman, Ademola Babalola thanked God for saving the life of one of the Union’s most resourceful and cerebral journalist, just as he applauded the management of the Ibadan Central Hospital for working several hours and battled hard to save the life of the journalist.

‘I want all members of the public to join us; the NUJ in thanking Dr Abib Olamitoye, the Chairman of Ibadan Central Hospital and the management team who deployed every facility to get Akeem Abas treated free of charge.

‘Dr Abib Olamitoye directed the doctors to move our colleague to a private suite in the hospital where he was treated and given the best of medical care without collecting a dime from NUJ or his family.

‘I am also using this medium to call on security agencies to step up their efforts at ridding our society of such heinous crimes which might have caused several deaths.

In a telephone conversation, Akeem Abas who was discharged yesterday, also appreciated Dr Abib Olamitoye and the management of Ibadan Central Hopital for the best of medical care ‘they deployed to treat me.

‘I also thank the NUJ, NAN Ibadan family, colleagues, friends and other well wishers for their call, messages and prayers, Abas added.

Addressing the media Sunday, on behalf of Kashi Philip, the Ward Chairman, the Ward Secretary Mr. Vangeryina Dooyum explained that Dr. Ayu was suspended by the Executive for alleged anti party activities.

Soludo, Okonjo-Iweala best appointments I made as president – Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria says his appointment of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iwela as the Minister of Finance and Prof Chukwuma Soludo as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria was the best he made during his administration.

Obasanjo said this on Saturday while speaking at the first year anniversary of Soludo as the Governor of Anambra in Awka.

He said he had no doubt in Soludo’s capacity to deliver in his new assignment.

Obasanjo stated, “When I appointed Soludo as my economic adviser, I worked with him very well and I was highly impressed with him so I chose to appoint him the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and he was one governor of CBN that was not from the commercial bank and he performed wonderfully well.

“I appointed Soludo and Okonjo-Iweala and I think probably that of all the appointments that I made while in office these two appointments were the best.”

He said he was accused of ruining the country because of his appointment of the two technocrats who were from the South-East by those who had “Igbophobia”.

He however pointed out that they performed creditably.

He said Soludo did well as CBN governor, while blaming the current crisis on the inability of the apex bank to function as the development bank that it should be.

He said, “Central Bank is not like a commercial bank. The Central Bank is for development and part of the problem we have suffered in the past, and we are suffering today, is that the Central Bank has not performed its job as a development bank as it should have.”

Also, addressing the issue of Nigerians travelling overseas for greener pastures, the former president said “When we develop our human capacity for export, it is not a waste. In fact, the experience they bring back, the outreach they get, the intellectual property they bring home and of course the money they bring back home are very important. East or West, home is the best, and they will be looking forward to coming back home.”
